~ Featured Destination: Kota Kinabalu

Copyright by eshark.designKota Kinabalu is our favourite city in Borneo! This may seem like a disingenuous statement given that we live here and there are not many cities in Borneo. However, consider some of the following aspects and you will see why Kota Kinabalu merits a closer look:

Kota Kinabalu (or "KK" to the locals) is a city by the sea with a colourful local scene. Not only is she is a thriving city with all the 'mod cons' we have come to expect from modern cities (like wiFi at your local Starbucks), but she is also a perfect launch pad for travel not only within Sabah and Sarawak, but also to the rest of Asia. A little-known fact is that KK has the second busiest international airport in Malaysia, with flights from almost all major Asian cities, and soon to be expected, direct flights from Europe.

Upon arrival visitors will find a huge range of accommodations of all types to suit all budgets, from boutique and business hotels, to service apartments, backpacker lodges, and host of 5 star beach resorts. Its worth a pause to consider: How many cities in Asia can boast of having a 5 star beach resort within the city itself? Restaurants in KK cater for all tastes and flavours, but it is the seafood that stands out as world class. Add to this a marina for visiting yachts, night golf, a revolving restaurant, Borneo's largest shopping malls, and you start to get the picture..

However, if night clubs, shopping malls, resorts and restaurants are not your cup of tea then you will be pleased to know that despite its increasing modernity KK is still a laid back city, with culture and nature in and all around it. In particular the Monsopiad cultural village, where the rich culture of the indigenous Kadazan tribe is brought to life, the traditional Tamu (markets) on the waterfront, and the lively Sunday market of Gaya street, which are bustling with local life, fascinating and great fun for shopping and sightseeing.

Best of all, KK's trump card is the surrounding nature. Just 15 minutes by speedboat is the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a group of five beautiful coral fringed islands. And just a half an hour drive behind Kota Kinabalu are the foothills of the rugged jungle covered Crocker range, where on a clear morning, you can see the highest peak in Southeast Asia - Mount Kinabalu - rising high in the distance, alluring you away from the comforts of the city and into the adventurous hills, jungles and rivers of the interior of Borneo..
