Camping on Mount Kinabalu

Discover Borneo: Camping on Mount Kinabalu
Difficulty Rating: 3/5- You will be climbing a major mountain and you are strongly advised to be in a physically fit condition. A fear of heights would be a hindrance, but not necessarily a major one. Love for the outdoors is essential; no climbing experience is necessary.

Camping is all about getting away from civilisation and into the wilds, and the higher reaches of Mount Kinabalu is a great wilderness. Up there you and your friends have an incredible expanse of terrain to explore and views that will stay with you forever. There are also a range of activities such as the Via Ferrata (in Italian meaning 'Iron Road' where a series of fixings and bridges built into the rock face), and a variety of different routes to the summit that can be explored.

Itinerary

Camping on Mount Kinabalu is an expedition-style tour that is organised based on your group size, abilities, timing, and itineraries are formed according to what you would like to do.

A 2 night/3 day tour would start from the Timpohon Gate (1800m) which is located at the Kinabalu Park Headquarters.

The Pendant Hut (near Laban Rata, the ‘half way’ point) provides an ideal break for lunch and here you will be met by the guide with whom you will be camping.

The summit of Mount Kinabalu is reached on day 2, and first night of camping is at the Sayat Sayat Slab, which is at 3680 metres and is the last mountain hut before the summit plateau of Mount Kinabalu. The air here is quite chilly so bring plenty of warm clothes!

For the fit and daring camping itineraries that include adventures on the Via Ferrata, and even sports climbing and rock climbing, can be incorporated.

For logistical reasons the camping groups should be minimum of 4 persons and maximum of 12. Food provided is basic but its warm and keeps your energy levels high!
