Northern Borneo offers a diverse array of biking terrain. An expedition will typically have hard jungle climbs, sweeping dirt track downhill's, logging roads and dust tracks, river and bridge crossings as well as road sections. You can expect to be dodging cattle and dogs, splashing through streams, tacking virgin forest, meeting friendly locals, and certainly experiencing some of the greatest views you will see.

Expeditions typically get cheaper with more people (up to a point), as each expedition involves 4WD back up, and plenty of logistics, but you won't have to worry about that! On long expeditions the backup is typically made up of two teams, a logistics and a ride team. The logistics team goes ahead of the group by 4WD and prepares camp, sets up any equipment, gets all the food, tents and drinks ready before the riders arrive at camp. The ride team consist of two riders and a driver with one of the team first aid trained and carrying a comprehensive medical kit as well as other rescue equipment, they back up the riders. Both teams carry plenty of spares of everything and communicate via satellite phone, mobile phone and radios. Air support from Sabah Air is also always on standby as are extensive evacuation plans. If there is a rider having a tough time with the ride, the heat or humidity then they can simply jump into the truck and enjoy the air-conditioning.

The ride is an all-inclusive deal, food, beer, wine, energy bars (powerbars) energy gels and drinks, bottled water, pre-built camps. All hotels and transport, bike maintenance, chocolate bars and even insect repellent! We also have a mechanic, a local guide as well as the fore-mentioned medic, satellite phone and full vehicle back-up.

Itinerary

Itineraries can range from a few days to several weeks or more, depending on your requirements. Around Kota Kinabalu we have a number of shorter trails that can be easy or testing, trails longer than 3 days involve a lot of planning. The major factors we have to consider when planning your itinerary are the size of the group, fitness and experience of the group, the time available and the preferred type of riding and experiences. Our team of experts have spent many years exploring routes and possibilities and are constantly coming up with new ideas and missions. For example one of the more daring, and exciting routes found starts on the East coast of North Borneo in Tenom, passes largely through primary jungle and ends up on the West Coast in Tabin Wildlife Reserve. This long route is one of the greatest chances of seeing some of Sabah’s stunning wildlife, but it is a remote expedition and takes at least a week!

What To Bring

The expedition team provides all food and drink including energy bars and drinks for the rides, local food barbeques, beer and wine! All camping equipment (except sleeping bag), transport, and emergency equipment is also provided.

You need to bring travel insurance, a sleeping bag, sun cream and insect repellent, any prescription medicine, cycling shorts, cycling shirts (at least two of each) socks, trainers, cycling chamois cream, sweat towel, cycling gloves, personal toiletries, a head torch and some bad jokes for the evenings! Much of this equipment can be found very easily in Kota Kinabalu for a good price.
