After very early morning breakfast a 2 hour drive takes you through the countryside and up to Kinabalu Park: Malaysia's UNESCO World Heritage site. The climb to the top of Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Southeast Asia, starts from the Kinabalu Park Headquarters. Mount Kinabalu is essentially a huge granite dome that was pushed up from the earth's crust as molten rock millions of years ago, and the result is a quite spectacular jagged, rocky peak which rises high above Borneo.
The park authorities only allow a maximum of 120 climbers per day and spaces are allotted based on available bed space.
The climb proceeds in 2 stages. The first stage is a 3 to 6 hour hike up to Laban Rata where you will be able to have a meal, and rest in basic but comfortable accommodations.
The second stage is the final ascent from Laban Rata, which usually starts at 2.30am so that you can reach the summit in 2 to 3 hours and just in time for sunrise and enjoy the magnificent atmosphere and views. You will then descend back down to Laban Rata for breakfast before trekking back to Timpohon Gate for your transport back to Kota Kinabalu.
