After settling into your hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah's capital, we will introduce you to North Borneo with a city tour to the Sabah Museum, the Aquarium and Mari Mari Cultural Village.
The next day a two-hour drive up to the Crocker range, includes a visit to Kinabalu park, a world heritage site, and Poring Hot Springs. Any aches from the canopy walkways and paths through the cool oak and chestnut forest can be soothed in the natural hot spring baths.
Continuing to Sandakan you will visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre and Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre famed for its successful rehabilitation programs where the orang utans are rescued and looked after until they can be released back into the wild. Labuk Bay is home to the long-nosed Proboscis monkey.
Turtle Island on the East Coast, just 1 hour by speedboat from Sandakan is a safe haven for the endangered green and hawksbill turtles and gives you the rare opportunity to watch turtle landings. As turtle landings usually occur after dusk, an overnight stay is required to see the turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs, but shining a light on them or using camera flashes should be avoided as either can be stressful on the creatures. Turtles lay their eggs throughout the year, but the best time to head there is between July and October when the sea is calmer.
Back in Kota Kinabalu, where, if your kids are aged 12 or above, they will love the white water rafting adventure on the Kiulu river (handled by professionals and a great introduction to the sport).
