Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is an ideal base for sailing yachts, having excellent marina facilities. From Kota Kinabalu the most accessible islands are in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. From here one can travel up or down the west coast towards scenic bays, rivers, and islands with attractions above and below water.
North of Kota Kinabalu is Mantanani, notable for beautiful clear waters, a sheltered anchorage, and deserted white sand beaches. Just 35 nautical miles south of Kota Kinabalu is Pulau Tiga (the featured on the tv show "survivor island"). Geothermal activity below the centre of the island has created warm bubbling mud baths which are not only relaxing to sit in but also therapeutic. Here one can stretch the legs on nature trails which take you through the jungle. Resident wildlife include macaques, giant monitor lizards, wild boar, and hornbill. Further north is Mengalum Island, where you can have a hand at fishing in an area that is known for Dogtooth and Yellow fin Tuna.
Day 1 - Arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport
Greet at Airport and transfer to Sutera Harbour Marina (pictured below), where begins the cruise to the islands of the Kota Kinabalu Marine Park. Watersports activities or trek along the beaches and forest trails from the Marine Park headquarters (if time permitting) and in the evening, cocktails at sunset to cap your first day in the tropics.
Day 2 - Pulau Tiga
A few years ago Pulau Tiga played host to the hit television series "Survivor Island". They chose Pulau Tiga for its outstanding natural beauty. Pulau Tiga has now returned to a peaceful state, and the South China sea that surrounds the island is full of marine life flickering around the corals. For the those looking for natural beauty therapy, take a walk up the hill behind the resort and bathe in the mud volcanoes. Other optional activities that you can arrange while here include: Kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, and banana-boat rides. Anchored near you can swim, snorkel and scuba dive from Raja Laut.
Day 3 - Cruise to Mengalum Island
The explorer Magellan stopped here and apparently this is where the name Mengalum comes from. Located 30 miles north west of KK. Good fishing grounds surround Mengalum where fishing enthusiasts come for day trips. Scuba dive around the island. For experienced divers there are several wreck dives at 30+m (can be strong currents) in the vicinity of Mantanani. Has shoals and reef around such as Saracen bank nearby, which may be good for diving. This is a "Robinson Crusoe" style island and an ideal place for a camp fire and beach BBQ in the evening.
Day 4 - Cruise to Mantanani Island
Having proceeded overnight you will wake up in Mantanani and we will serve breakfast at anchor in front of the island. Mantanani consists of 2 islands, and is surrounded by coral reefs, very clear waters and very appealing. The smaller island is a bird sanctuary and in the evening you will see a spectacular swirl of 1000's of swallows returning to nest. On the larger island there are a couple of small resorts and there is a small sea gypsy village which is worth a visit if you are interested to see how they live. Beautiful views of Mount Kinabalu and beaufiful sunsets make this an ideal place for a camp fire and beach BBQ in the evening.
Day 5 - Cruise to Ambong / Usukan Bay
Departing early from Mantanani we will serve breakfast on the way to Ambong Bay. In the morning we go on a countryside tour of Kota Belud where you can see the villages, rice fields and markets of rural Borneo. Return for lunch. In the afternoon around 3.30pm we go to the nearby Kawa-Kawa River to look for the Proboscis Monkey (long nosed monkeys native to Borneo) who live in the trees besides the river. On one side of this river is human settlement and another side is mainly mangrove forests. We might also spot macaques, monitor lizards and many birds such as oriental darter, white-bellied sea eagle, little heron, blue-throated bee eater, white-collar kingfisher, egrets and bulbul. At night we proceeded to the mangrove forest of nearby Abai River to look for fireflies. If lucky you will see the "Christmas Trees", which are in fact the twinkling light of hundreds of fireflies gathered on the trees.
Day 6 - Cruise to Pulau Gaya
Anchor in front of the Bunga Raya resort hotel in Gaya island and scuba dive around the north of Gaya island,. Afternoon Spa treatments: After all the activities of the past week sooth tired muscles at the Bunga Raya day spa. Evening Nightlife in KK City: Kota Kinabalu has a great nightlife and club scene. Start your evening at the Shamrock Irish Pub situated on the waterfront. Later the place to head for dancing is a club called Shenanigans, but for a really late night there is only one place open until 4am - the infamous "Razzmatazz". If you prefer to relax maybe try some of the famous Chinese seafood restaurants and have a wander around the Arts and Crafts market which is open until 9pm.
Day 7 - Sutera Harbour / Kota Kinabalu
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with the Raja Laut cruising back to Sutera Harbour Marina. Transfer to Kota Kinabalu International airport will be arranged in advance to suit your flight departure times.
