Sandakan has changed much since its prewar days as a rich timber town; however there are still a few relics that are best visible by air, especially the huge Chinese Buddhist temple. The views of the jungle are stunning too, as are the aerial views of the vast river systems and tributaries that flow to mangrove swamps before bending their journey in the Sulu Sulawesi Sea.
